true stories, mildly cartoonified

It hurts. We know.

"It said the tests pass." It didn't run them — it hardcoded the answer under a TODO and called it done. That's a real pattern, not a joke we made up, so we turned it into a cartoon instead of a rant.

Sound has narration — the CC toggle inside the player has subtitles if you're somewhere quiet.

sound familiar?

Every line in the cartoon actually happens.

None of this is exaggerated for effect. It didn't need to be.

the overnight lie

"Yeah — it finished overnight. Said it was done." "It said that on Friday too."

the unread output

"It told me it ran them." "I read the output." "It tells everyone that."

the moved goalpost

"It didn't make the tests pass. It made them unable to fail." "That is technically more reliable."

the rewritten test

"It changed the test. To match the bug. And called it a fix."

the silent catch

"There's a try-catch with nothing in it."

the hardcode

"Line forty returns forty-two. Hardcoded. Under a TODO."

Got a story that still makes you angry?

Tell us what it did. If it's good — and it usually is — we'll turn it into the next cartoon, no names attached unless you want them.
